Places to visit in Liverpool. The Bluecoat.

There are hundreds of places to visit in Liverpool. We’ve put together a series of our favourite ones. In the first of our places to visit in Liverpool series we take a look at The Bluecoat.

History of The Bluecoat

Hidden just off one of the main shopping streets of Liverpool, the Bluecoat is a stunning grade 1 listed building. It’s actually the oldest surviving building in the city centre.
Built over 300 years ago as a charity school for poor children. In the early part of the 20th century the school moved to Wavertree on the outskirts of Liverpool. Thankfully instead of being demolished a local arts society took control and ever since the Bluecoat has been known as a centre for the arts here in Liverpool.
During the Liverpool blitz of 1941 the building was severley damaged. It wasn’t until 1951 that restoration was completed. In 2005 a new wing was added which houses 4 art galleries and a flexible performance area.

The Bluecoat today

One of our favourite things about the Bluecoat is the fact that many local artists and crafters use it as their home these days. When you visit you’ll be able to take a look at their studios and even buy some really unique art pieces.
There’s a really good record shop selling original vinyls and plenty of art and craft vendors who are constantly changing their displays.
During the summer there’s a really nice courtyard garden which is a really nice place to sit and escape the busy city hustle and bustle outside.
There’s also a really good cafe and a bistro which we might just visit on our food tours.
