Liverpool Voted One of the World’s Most Walkable Cities.
Liverpool was recently voted as one of the world’s most walkable cities according to Forbes magazine.
Whether you’re a local or a visitor, there’s something truly special about exploring Liverpool on foot. The city’s compact layout, diverse neighborhoods, and stunning waterfront make walking not just a mode of transportation, but a delightful way to experience its many charms. It’s perfect for our walking food tours as there’s so much to see and eat within a relatively short distance.
The Heart of the City: A Pedestrian’s Paradise
At the core of Liverpool is its city center, a pedestrian-friendly area where historic landmarks, modern shopping districts, and cultural hotspots are all within easy reach. The famous waterfront, with the iconic Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building, and Port of Liverpool Building, is just a short stroll from the heart of the city. The Liverpool ONE shopping district, a contemporary open-air complex, seamlessly integrates with the surrounding streets, allowing for a leisurely shopping experience.
We start our Docks to Dining walking tour outside the magnificent Bluecoat arts centre in Liverpool ONE. It’s not until about an hour into the tour that we actually get near a vehicular road.
Cultural Corners and Hidden Gems
Liverpool’s walkability isn’t just about convenience; it’s about discovery. The city’s diverse neighborhoods each have their own unique character, and walking is the best way to experience them. Take a stroll down Bold Street, known for its independent shops, quirky cafes, and vibrant street art. Did you also know that Bold street is home to a phenomenom known as the Bold Street time slip? This is when people have recorded feeling a bit dizzy and believing that they’ve slipped back in time whilst walking down the street. This might have something to do with the array of decent drinking establishments around the area. There’s some really cool independent eateries around here, some of whom we visit on the food tour.
The Georgian Quarter, with its cobblestone streets and historic architecture, offers a glimpse into the city’s past, while the Baltic Triangle, a former industrial area turned creative hub, is the place to explore Liverpool’s contemporary art and music scene.
The Waterfront: A Scenic Stroll
No visit to Liverpool is complete without a walk along its famous waterfront. Starting at the Albert Dock, a beautifully restored complex of dock buildings and warehouses, you can take in some of the city’s most iconic sights. The Merseyside Maritime Museum, Tate Liverpool, and The Beatles Story are all located here, making it easy to combine culture with a leisurely walk.
Continuing along the waterfront, you’ll find the Museum of Liverpool, a striking modern building that offers panoramic views of the River Mersey. As you walk further, you’ll reach the Echo Arena and Exhibition Centre, and eventually, the historic Pier Head. This area is perfect for a relaxing stroll, with plenty of benches, cafes, and public art installations along the way. Again, all pedestrianised and walking friendly.
Green Spaces and Parks
Liverpool is also home to numerous parks and green spaces, all within walking distance of the city center. Sefton Park, one of the city’s most beloved parks, is a short walk from the Georgian Quarter. This 235-acre park is perfect for a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. With its beautiful lake, palm house, and lush greenery, it’s a favorite spot for both locals and visitors.
Closer to the city center, you’ll find St. John’s Gardens, a tranquil space adjacent to St. George’s Hall. This small but charming park is an ideal place to take a break during your explorations. And if you’re in the mood for a longer walk, head to Everton Park, where you’ll be rewarded with some of the best views of the city.
It’s no suprise that Liverpool’s walkability is one of its greatest assets. The city’s compact size, combined with its wealth of attractions, makes it easy to explore on foot. Whether you’re meandering through its historic streets, discovering hidden gems in its neighborhoods, or enjoying a scenic walk along the waterfront, Liverpool offers a pedestrian experience that is both enriching and enjoyable. So, next time you find yourself in this vibrant city, leave the car behind, put on your walking shoes, and come and join us on a walking food tour around the city.
